Parliamentary procedure refers to the rules and practices used by decision-making bodies—such as legislative assemblies, boards of directors, or committees—during meetings to ensure orderly, fair, and efficient proceedings. The most widely recognized system is Robert’s Rules of Order, which provides a set of guidelines for conducting meetings, making motions, debating issues, and making decisions in a structured manner. Parliamentary procedure ensures that all voices are heard, while keeping discussions on topic and avoiding confusion.

In a typical parliamentary procedure competition, participants are given a series of motions, resolutions, or issues to address in a mock meeting. The participants must use parliamentary rules to make and second motions, engage in debate, and vote on issues. These competitions are not only an engaging way for students and participants to learn the intricacies of parliamentary rules, but also foster essential skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, leadership, and teamwork. Participants come away with greater confidence, sharper minds, and a deeper understanding of how organizations function.

The Fort Frye FFA chapter had both a Novice team, consisting of 8th and 9th graders, and an Advanced team, consisting of 10th thru 12th graders. The chapter is excited to share the results from both teams. The Advanced team placed 3rd at district and received a gold rating! The chapters Novice team placed 2nd at districts and qualified to go to State for the second year in a row! The team will compete at the state level on Saturday, December 7th. We are beyond proud of all of these members who put in the hard work, and we wish everyone the best of luck!
